SCBWI Winter Conference 2020

The past two months have been incredibly busy, mainly because I was prepping for and attending SCBWI's 2020 Winter Conference in New York! If you have the chance to attend one of these conferences, I highly recommend you do so. You'll come away invigorated, inspired, and with more than a few new friends in the field.

Friday kicked off in the evening with the Golden Kite Awards and the Portfolio Showcase. I entered my portfolio and the book dummy for Fanny's Fantastic Swim, and received some wonderful feedback. I even reconnected with some of my former professors from FIT!

Saturday was a whirlwind from beginning to end: query letter readings, book critiques, networking, and an eye-opening discussion and demonstration of accurately drawing race in picture books, capped off by a great speech by the one and only Jerry Pinkney.

Sunday had a joke contest (in which two of my entries won!), a nice recap on the ten principles of making and marketing children's books and I got to meet Jerry Pinkney and the great Brett Helquist of A Series of Unfortunate Events fame.

Part of me is still winding down from the weekend, but I'm feeling more motivated than before to get out there and make and submit more art. Be sure to return soon and see what I've got!

Have a nice day!
